In kendo, like in most martial arts, you have a material opponent to engage combat with, and you might win or lose the matches, it is a point-based system.Īlthough I´ve never actually done kendo, I think -and have been told by practicioners of both arts- that it is way more physically demanding than iaido. You compete against yourself in order to improve in time through dedicated practice and focus, but not against other students. ![]() although lately there have appeared some iaido contests here in the West (where two iaidoka perform at the same time, each one on his own, and the judges decide who did it better), iaido is by definition non-competitive, since when practicing, there exists only one person: you. If you´re looking for a competitive activity, then stay away from iaido.
